Phase diagram of Hertzian spheres.

چکیده
We report the phase diagram of interpenetrating Hertzian spheres. The Hertz potential is purely repulsive, bounded at zero separation, and decreases monotonically as a power law with exponent 5/2, vanishing at the overlapping threshold. This simple functional describes the elastic interaction of weakly deformable bodies and, therefore, it is a reliable physical model of soft macromolecules, like star polymers and globular micelles. Using thermodynamic integration and extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we computed accurate free energies of the fluid phase and a large number of crystal structures. For this, we defined a general primitive unit cell that allows for the simulation of any lattice. We found multiple re-entrant melting and first-order transitions between crystals with cubic, trigonal, tetragonal, and hexagonal symmetries.

Increasing the density melts ultrasoft colloidal glasses.
We use theory and simulations to investigate the existence of amorphous glassy states in ultrasoft colloids. We combine the hypernetted chain approximation with mode-coupling theory to study the dynamic phase diagram of soft repulsive spheres interacting with a Hertzian potential, focusing on low temperatures and large densities. At constant temperature, we find that an amorphous glassy state i...
متن کاملAnalytical and numerical investigation of the radiation from concentric metamaterial spheres excited by an electric Hertzian dipole
[1] The canonical problem of an electric Hertzian dipole radiating in the presence of a pair of concentric double negative metamaterial spheres is investigated analytically and numerically. The spatial distribution of the near field as well as the total radiated power are examined. The results are compared to those for the corresponding structures made of conventional double positive materials....
متن کاملComplexation of DNA with positive spheres: phase diagram of charge inversion and reentrant condensation
The phase diagram of a water solution of DNA and oppositely charged spherical macroions is studied. DNA winds around spheres to form beads-on-a-string complexes resembling the chromatin 10 nm fiber. At small enough concentration of spheres these ”artificial chromatin” complexes are negative, while at large enough concentrations of spheres the charge of DNA is inverted by the adsorbed spheres. C...
متن کاملPhase diagram of dipolar hard and soft spheres: manipulation of colloidal crystal structures by an external field.
Phase diagrams of hard and soft spheres with a fixed dipole moment are determined by calculating the Helmholtz free energy using simulations. The pair potential is given by a dipole-dipole interaction plus a hard-core and a repulsive Yukawa potential for soft spheres. Our system models colloids in an external electric or magnetic field, with hard spheres corresponding to uncharged and soft sphe...
متن کاملPhase behavior of dipolar hard and soft spheres.
We study the phase behavior of hard and soft spheres with a fixed dipole moment using Monte Carlo simulations. The spheres interact via a pair potential that is a sum of a hard-core Yukawa (or screened-Coulomb) repulsion and a dipole-dipole interaction. The system can be used to model colloids in an external electric or magnetic field. Two cases are considered: (i) colloids without charge (or d...
